Our House

Yes, I know. You had given up on this blog. So had we. And guess what? Now we're putting the house on the market. I know what you're thinking... "But, what about the sauna and all the work you've done?" and "But, the market's at rock bottom! This is the worst time to be selling!" and "Where will you go?" and "You're stupid!"

Certainly, there are reasons to stay. But, it seems to us, the reasons to go are more compelling. First of all, this mortgage (actually, we have two) seems to be causing a most annoying side-effect...jobs. Jobs that we don't care about and don't enjoy. Jobs that suck the Lifeforce from us like leeches. To this you might respond, "Well, find a higher paying and more rewarding job. Or invest and have your money make money FOR you!"

Call us rebels, but we both tend to scoff at the activities of the masses: full-time jobs, babies, mortgages, investing, consuming, vacations at resorts in the Bahamas, iPods, cell phones, innernets, and other deadly comforts... We do partake of many of these things, but ever so reluctantly.

Our aim is to retreat from the unsatisfactory lifestyle in which we've gotten ourselves tangled, regroup, and plan for a Bold Move. We don't know exactly what that is yet, but it certainly will not include full-time jobs that we dislike, nor mortgages, nor hour upon hour sitting in front of a glowing screen day after day after day.

I shall end this post with a story...

As many of you know, there's a beautiful river just a stone's throw from our house...the St. Vrain, it's called. This happens to be the time of year when we often find ourselves donning our bathing suits and jumping into the cold rushing waters. This plunge has an amazing effect upon one's entire being. At the moment of submersion, one finds oneself being churned and turned amongst a flurry of bubbles and rapids. Eventually, one's head emerges and gulps for air...often a loud shout escapes one's lips, a shout of astonishment and joy. One steps onto the bank feeling the true meaning of the word "refreshed". To be "freshed" again, to rediscover the excitement and joie de vivre that has always been there, but has been covered over with a thick, gooey film of apathy and (to quote Thoreau) quiet desperation.

Essentially, what Gretchen and Michael are looking for at this time in their lives is a profound Cold Plunge...a plunging into the Unknown, a striking out onto the road less traveled. I think we both feel as though we were on such a road in our lives not so long ago, but we've been suckered (as so many are) back onto the common path. We're ready for a Waking Up to the Light!

We hope you'll support us in our search for Truth and Meaning. ...we may also ask to sleep on your couch at some point, so be forewarned.

Ahhh, how exciting to not know what the future may bring! As far as couch-flopping, ours are eminently comfortable and perpetually available for you two.
